Foundation Subject | Geography- plastic pollution Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFPoIU5iiYQ (A Whale’s Tale | Hope Works) Hold a discussion with your child about plastic polluting the oceans. Is it ever a good idea to dump our rubbish into the sea? Where should our rubbish be stored? How are animals affected by plastic pollution? How must the creatures in the film have felt swimming around the rubbish whilst being entangled in it? After a discussion, watch these inspiring children talk about their efforts to help with the global plastic problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWxtlqHjxvo (Kids against plastic | Amy & Ella Meek | TEDxExeter) How did the video make your child feel? What do they think about the children who are seeking change in how plastic packaging is used? Activity: Design a poster to encourage other people NOT to throw their plastic waste and litter into the wider environment. Encourage others to consider how they can limit their plastic use. For example, carrying a re-useable water bottle or coffee cup with them rather than buying a bottle of water from the shop. Also, taking re-useable shopping bags to the supermarket rather than using the plastic ones provided at the shops. Discuss how you and your family could adopt some of these changes into your daily lives! Visit the website: https://www.kidsagainstplastic.co.uk/ for further activities and learning opportunities. |

Foundation Subject | Religion- Judaism- Passover Watch the video: The story of the Passover https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zmq6sbk Activity: encourage your child to think about how the Jewish people must have felt when they were enslaved by the Pharaoh. What must have it been like to have no freedom to live the life they wanted, while working in unbearably hot conditions and performing heavy labour every single day? Jewish people want to remember and honour the Jewish people of the past and the troubles they faced. The Passover celebration and Seder meal is a way of remembering Jewish ancestors and Jewish people of the past. Talk about events or special things you do or have done in your own family to remember and honour the people you love and respect. Use the Seder meal activity sheet (LINK TO ONLINE FILE) and the following website: https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/more-find-out/festivals-and-holidays/passover/ to describe what the symbolic offerings mean. Click on the name of the Passover food to view a definition and use it to help your child write their own descriptions. Not all Muslims believe they must use a mat when praying to Allah but some think a prayer mat acts as a barrier between themselves and the earth. Some Muslims believe a prayer mat keeps a person in a clean and pure state of being as they pray. Prayer mats are always rectangular in shape and have an arch design on them pointing in the direction of the holy city, Mecca. Look at the images of the prayer mats on this presentation or on the internet and look at the designs you can see. You may notice: geometric patternstext from the Muslim holy book, the Qur’anPictures of famous mosques Activity: Design your own pattern for a prayer mat in the outline provided or draw the outline by copying it in pencil if you do not have access to a printer. Remember, in the religion of Islam, there are no pictures of people or animals drawn on mats, walls or clothing. Some Muslims believe only Allah is the one who can create these beings and that it is not the place of a human being to think of himself as a creator. Your prayer mat should not have pictures of people or animals on them! What exciting patterns could you create instead? |

Foundation Subject | History – Neil Armstrong Explain that Armstrong and his fellow astronauts spent 8 days in space and ended the Apollo 11 mission with a splashdown landing in the Pacific Ocean. Encourage your child to think about being in space for that length of time. Ask: Q: What would you miss and what would you take with you in your space rocket? Your child could draw a rocket outline or print one from the internet, – then they could draw and label the items they would take with them. At the top of the rocket, they could write a sentence starter such as, – “In my rocket I would take…” Extension: Use the materials in your own home to build a rocket! You could use it as an opportunity to engage in a little Apollo 11 imaginative play … you may even want to have a picnic on the Moon just like the bear in Whatever Next by Jill Murphy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6c5cb0u0rPM or listen to the story of The Man on the Moon (a day in the life of Bob) by Simon Bartram https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt5zQ1UO6rE |

Foundation Subject | Science – Living things and their habitats – What is a woodland habitat? Watch: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zx882hv/articles/zc42xnb What is a woodland habitat? Have you and your child visited a woodland habitat? If you live near and have opportunity, why not visit the beautiful woodland at Heysham Head as part of your daily exercise? Your child can draw or take photographs during your walk to Heysham Head (if you visit) to make their own woodland habitat collage. If you are feeling extra creative, why not cut the front off a cereal box and create a 3D model of a woodland habitat? Your child may already have small world figures of woodland creatures that they may want to use to enhance their model. Alternatively, your child could just draw them onto cardboard or paper! For other inspiration that does not include walking to Heysham Head, let your child observe this woodland slide show found on the RSPB website (scroll half-way down the page): https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-kids/facts-about-nature/facts-about-habitats/woodlands/ Also, a great Discovery Education UK video about woodlands may also inspire them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLBSOKqVNcU |

Foundation Subject | Religion- Islam Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCaRkcib2IA Charlie and Blue ask about Allah and Creation Activity: Muslims believe that God has called upon each of them to be a khalifah of the earth. This means he wants them to look after and care for the world. Ask: Q: Is this important to you? How can we care for the world? What sort of things could we do? Is there something you can do together as a family to show that you care about the community and the world you live in? Could you make a bird feeder for the hungry birds? Could you pick litter on your street or on the beach? Could you plant a tree or a flower that will attract pollinators? See this link showing you how to make a loo roll bird feeder: https://www.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/birdwatch/birdwatch-extra/make-your-own-loo-roll-bird-feeders/ In thinking about stewardship of the earth, your child could design a poster showing some of the ways they can care for the world around them. This could be produced as a spider diagram, a collage or even a painting or drawing. Encourage your child to write 1 or 2 sentences about the ways in which they could demonstrate care for the environment. |

Foundation Subject | Design Technology Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqzEj_W4bUk (an animated version of the story The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch – David Armitage and Ronda Armitage). Activity: Mr Grinling is hungry and he would like you to design him a healthy, scrumptious sandwich for his lunch! He says it needs to be a sandwich that you would also like to eat because he wants to know that it will taste just delicious before you make it for him! Your plan for your sandwich will need to include: What sort of bread you will use: will it be brown, multi-seed, white, tiger bread, wholemeal bread or a baguette? What filling you will use: will it be cheese, ham, tuna, pickle, egg, beef or prawn? What salad vegetables you will include: will it be cucumber, tomato, lettuce, cress, spring onion? Once you have designed the sandwich for Mr Grinling (drawing and labelling the ingredients you will use), you should plan a day that you make the sandwich (with the help of a grown-up) using your sandwich plan and then run a taste test by eating it! If something does not taste good, you can evaluate your sandwich plan by changing how you would make it next time. |

Have a go at some of the problems together as a family if you get stuck!) Or, consolidate this week’s learning: Have a teddy bear’s picnic or a tea party and share out equal pieces of fruit, sweets or biscuits etc. Challenge your child: Q: We have 10 biscuits and 5 teddy bears. How can we share the biscuits out equally so they all have them same? You can also practise grouping equally by putting a range of objects on a table and then encouraging your child to put them in equal groups of 2, 3, 4 etc. Remember to state that equal groups will mean each has the same number or amount. |

Foundation Subject | Art – photo cut outs Read this quick webpage: https://kinderart.com/art-lessons/drawing/face-study/ Use a photograph of a face (one that you do not mind cutting in half) or find one from a newspaper or magazine, – cut it length ways down the middle so the face is presented in 2 halves. Stick half to a piece of paper and encourage your child to sketch the missing other half. They could use the discarded half as a reference to help them with the drawing. Encourage them to look closely at the outline of the face and the details. Enjoy! J |

Foundation Subject | History – Neil Armstrong Watch the video: ‘highlights from Neil Armstrong’s mission to the Moon’ (scroll half way down the page). https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjwvb82/articles/zhx4k2p Activity: Q: Can your child remember the famous statement that Armstrong made as he planted his first foot onto the moon? Encourage your child to say it with you: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Explain that when Armstrong looked back into space he saw planet Earth glowing brightly in green and blue. His fellow astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, said that Earth looked like “a brilliant jewel in the black velvet sky.” Q: How do you think Armstrong felt when he saw planet Earth? What emotions did he feel? What else may he have said to himself or others? Encourage your child to pretend that they are Neil Armstrong standing on the moon looking back at planet Earth. If you want to, you could use props or costumes to animate this or show this image of Earth from the Apollo 11 space mission to support their thinking/ideas: https://moon.nasa.gov/resources/187/apollo-11-mission-image-view-of-moon-limb-with-earth-on-the-horizon/ Once your child has enjoyed getting into role, you could record them as they create a short video diary in the role of Armstrong talking about what he saw, heard and the emotions he may have felt. If preferred, your child could write a short diary extract to explore the same things: what he saw, heard and the emotions he may have felt. They could also draw an accompanying picture of Armstrong and planet Earth. |

Foundation Subject | Religion- Islam Q: Can your child remember the name of the ritual where Muslims wash themselves before prayer? (Wudu) Explain that your child will be learning a little bit more about the importance of prayer to the Muslim community. Hold a discussion about prayer and encourage your child to think deeply and give their opinion on the following questions: Q: Why do you think Muslims pray to Allah? (God in Arabic). Q: Can you think of other religious people who pray to a god? (Christians, Hindus, Jews). Watch: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z4gkq6f (Muslim Prayer) Activity: Discuss the part of the video where it showed the Ka’bah (the black cube shaped building) that is located in Mecca and where Muslims travel from all around the world to visit. It is a special place for Muslims as it is a place where they can come together regardless of what they look like, how rich or poor they are, what jobs they do etc. Encourage your child to consider and think about the places that are special to them. Why are these places special? Your child could draw a picture of 1 or 2 of these special places and write 1-2 sentences to explain why the place is special. Sentence starters such as, “This place is special to me because…” or “I think this place is special because” may help your child to frame their ideas. |
