Our Vision (Intent):
| I would like to see the pupils at Trumacar Primary School show a wider awareness of the other languages that we have in the planet. Currently in KS2, the pupils learn Spanish and I would like to see the pupils being taught lessons to a good standard. I want to see that the pupils and the staff are enjoying learning/teaching a new language. I also want to see the teachers teaching the subject on a regular basis and teaching effectively, enthusiastically, and confidently. By the end of Year 4 pupils will have been taught: Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases, and basic language structures Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases By the end of Year 6 pupils will have an awareness of and had the experience of: Present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases, and simple writing Appreciate stories, songs, poems, and rhymes in the language Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary Write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly Describe people, places, things, and actions orally and in writing Languages – key stage 2 Understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine, and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are like English. |
Behind the Vision:
My vision for the future would be to see Spanish being taught to a high standard throughout Key Stage 2. I want the pupils to enjoy learning the subject and want to practise speaking Spanish outside of the classroom. I would love to be able to apply for the quality mark award for Spanish/PFL and gain the bronze award or higher. I would also like to see staff more enthusiastic about teaching the subject and even go to Spain as part of their professional development. A lot of the pupils that we have at our school do not have the opportunity to travel to a foreign country, so I want them to have the experience of learning another language to inspire them when they are older to travel and experience the culture and explore the language further. However, we do have some pupils that have had the opportunity to visit other countries and most of the pupils have visited Spanish speaking countries such as the Costa del Sol. For these pupils I would like them to have some basic language skills to help them or their parents in asking for general and basic things. E.g., asking for an ice-cream or asking for directions.
In order to achieve the vision:
Although we are using the Primary languages network for our planning and teaching of Spanish, I feel that there is too much for teachers currently to cover. I want to personalise this scheme of work for Trumacar so that the teachers can plan and teach well organised and meaningful lessons. This in turn will mean that the pupils at Trumacar are receiving a well-focused Spanish curriculum making more of an impact on their learning. The teachers are currently unsure on how to assess the pupils’ s progression in Spanish from Year 3 to Year 6. As subject leader, I need to look at our newly personalised curriculum and create a friendly assessment framework that will help monitor a pupil’s progression in Spanish from Year 3 up to Year 6.
